About

The Novel. Zombies in the Spring was originally a novel started for National Novel Writing Month. However, I started a second novel at the same time and ended up devoting all of my attention to that. While I could have theoretically written two novels in a month, I was also juggling an intensive Finnish course, being a Municiple Liason for NaNoWriMo, and home life. The other novel won out because it is darker and more intense and thus better suited for my mood during dark, dreary November. Rather than do a shit job writing ZS, I tabled it until I was out from under projects and class and in a lighter mood.

I started this story with the intention of writing fluffy, indulgent fantasy without worrying about clichés or conventions or if the sex scene I was dying to write was appropriate. I originally intended to pile everything that I fancied into it, but it took its own shape after a very short time. It's still fluffy, indulgent fantasy, and it's set in a pseudo-Victorian world with elves and magic but also a republic government, cardboard boxes, plastic, and crank-handled telephones. It went and got actual three dimensional characters and a story and turned into a comedic romance, but what the hell, I had a hell of a lot of fun writing it.

The Writer. My name is R. Bail, and I'm 27, genderqueer and generally queer, married, and an American expat living in Finland. I draw for amusement and some small amount of profit and I write with the intention of making it my life's work, as it seems the only thing I'm really suited to. I have three manuscripts awaiting re-writing and another online project (Night City), all considerably less silly than ZS. I also have various art projects in the works; go to the top of the domain (rbail.net) to see the news on those, or check the Links section to see where else you can find my work. I'm also the Official Wish³ Muse (TM). No, really.

The Website. Hand designed and coded by hand and with the help of Dreamweaver for the use of templates. Color scheme grabbed from the awesome Color Index book by Jim Krause and put out by HOW Design Books. The design scheme is the same as the rest of my website to provide a consistant look and feel, with some Art Nouveau touches to make it unique to this particular story.

The "Creative Commons - Some Rights Reserved" button. Creative Commons is an alternative to traditional copyright that allows more freedom to to creators to allow others to share their works or make derivative works (fan art and fan fic, for instance) without worrying about litigation. I chose to go this route with this novel and the other content I'm making for it because this project is purely for fun for me, and I want other people to be able to play in my sandbox and have fun with me.

You should click on the Creative Commons button to get the run-down of the license I've chosen and the legal text. Here are the specifics:

  • Attribution: Share this with anyone you want - republish parts, print it out, but whatever you do you must keep my name (R. Bail) on it and a link to this site (http://zombies.rbail.net) so those you share it with can see the original source. You must attribute when doing derivative works such as fan fic and fan art as well, by putting something like "From 'Zombies in the Spring' by R. Bail, http://zombies.rbail.net." Basically, you must have my name, the story name, and the website, preferably as a clickable link and in an OBVIOUS place. Please contact me as well and tell me what you're doing, I'd love to see what you're up to!
  • Non-Commercial: You may not sell any part of the original work or any derivative works without my express permission. I'm offering this for free and you must keep it free!
  • Share-alike: You must offer any republishings of this work or any derivative works under the same Creative Commons license this original work is under - you must still require attribution (to myself as the creator of the original and yourself as the creator of the derivative if you have made a derivative work), you must still require that others offer it in non-commercial form, and you must require that they stick to the same license.
If you have any questions about this or wish to discuss an exception, please feel free to e-mail me.
